Are you READY for some FOOTBALL-related post?

The first kick-off of the 2006 NFL season is less than two days away. Are you ready? Have you bought adequate supplies of beverages and chips? Is your TV positioned for optimal viewing from your reclining chair? Most importantly, have you signed up for a Fantasy Football team?

If not, you may not get very much out of this post, sorry! Should've signed up.

One of the most common questions that people have about Fantasy Football is, "Who should I start this week?" There's no right answer (prior to the games, at least), but everyone has opinions. To help gather up that mass of collective knowledge, a clever Y! Sports engineer (not me, sadly) created Sit or Start. It's kind of like a game---you're given two players as options, you pick the one that you would start if they were on your team this week, and then you see how you match up against how everyone else voted (at the same time as it presents you with another matchup). Addictively simple. From the millions of votes we get, though, covering just about every possible pair of players many times over, we can start to get an understanding of who our users think are the best players to play each week. People-powered rankings, neat!

Oh, and then we share the results with everyone playing the game (if you have a fantasy football team, you can find the link on your Tools page) and recommend rosters based on the rankings for players on their teams. Man, you'd think I'd get some sort of advantage by working on the Sports team, but nooooo.

[...] The Idol Ranker tries to help out by pairing up contestants and letting you make an easier decision of which one of the two is better, and then bubbles up the results into a robust people-powered ranked list. It’s built off of the same technology as Sports’ Player Ranker, so you know it must be good. :D [...]
