School of Roc…well, on your Block

I probably won't have to worry any time soon about relocating to another city and finding good schools for my kids in the area, what with me not having any kids that I'm aware of, but if I did (and, really, please let me know if I do), then this could be a handy tool. The Yahoo! Real Estate School Search Thingy lets you know about all of the schools that are in the area of wherever you're searching for a home, allows you to filter them by type of school and grade levels, and links you to school ratings and summaries provided by the non-profit site GreatSchools.net, which, judging by the name, is the place to be if you're looking for information on great schools.

When you poke into a school in further detail, you can see all of the vital statistics and personal testimonials from Real Peopleā„¢, and check out the neighborhood to figure out where all the good grocery stores, parks, restaurants, and gas stations are. While this can't exactly be used to narrow down where you ought to live to send your kids to the best schools possible (since it doesn't editorialize and let you sort schools by some rather arbitrary rank), it still should give you some better context for making a decision between a few choice towns.
