What to do on a Friday night?

Aside from posting on this blog? True, you already got a double dose of coolness yesterday (including the really darn awesome idea about how to share events to a group using Y! Calendar), but it still feels wrong to let a weekday pass by un-Cool-Thinged. This one is a bit more well-known and only "pretty cool", anyway, so it balances out.

If you've used Yahoo! Music Engine, you're probably familiar with the concept of Yahoo! using your song ratings to make recommendations about other things you might like to listen to. Turns out that we do the same thing for movies. Once you've rated enough films, Y! Movies can provide you lists of movies you might like that are currently out in theaters, on TV, or newly released on DVD, and also point you towards other users who have tastes that are sort of like yours. After signing up and rating a few movies that were put in front of me, I was given a set of recommendations that included X-Men: The Last Stand and Mission: Impossible 3, which I had seen and enjoyed, as well as Thank You for Smoking, which I've been wanting to see for months.

Hm. Personalized recommendations like these would be really handy for restaurants, too. *heads off to look for a Yahoo! Local engineer*

While you’re at it, find a Y! TV engineer and tell them to highlight recommended TV Movies in the grid listings and find a Y! Movies engineer and tell them to provide a link for each recommended TV movie to add them to your Y! Calendar.

Cable companies are really pushing their on-demand content. I suppose movie recommendations should also begin including the current on-demand cable offerings pretty soon.

I suppose I would be that Y!Local engineer.

Suffice to say that it’s something that’s been brought up before and I’ve been placing a few bugs in various ears.

Granted, I’ll do more of that once I get back.
