Goin’ Walkabout

It happens at least once a week and I find it horribly disorienting. I feel isolated, alone and under an oppressive all-seeing entity that needles my flesh.

That's about when my wife tells me to stop being so damn dramatic and that it's good for me to get outside and away from the computer for a while. Granted, I usually translate that as "you're going shopping with me". And like most of my kindred that means waiting around for your spouse to finish looking for whatever item they're searching for. Total boredom, right? Well, fear not! We'll let you sate your on-line jones.

Yahoo! Mobile Services offers a pretty darn handy service. You give them the specifications of your new spiffy web-enabled phone and they tell you what Yahoo! stuff that's available for it. Granted, some of the services are darn handy even when you're not wondering how anyone could find that style of shoe comfortable or exactly who in their right mind would buy a life sized fiberglass statue of Superman.

Oh yeah, and if you *are* mobile, I suggest you add the following URL to your phone. http://mobile.yahoo.com. Go there from your handset and you'll get the Y!Mobile services, including mail, search, local, news, games, photos and a heck of a lot more.

There, see? Being away from your computer doesn't mean you're disconnected. It just means you have to excuse yourself more often as you run into peop... excuse me.

i have a very common / popular samsung phone - the mm-a940, which is not listed. it would be great if they updated that list more frequently, or if there were a way to be alerted when a certain phone were added…thanks.

Most of the Sprint’s newer Multimedia phones are not even list on the web site.

Yeah, the Treo I’ve got from Sprint can’t run a lot of Java apps, but I blame Sun and PalmSource for that more than I blame Sprint (Mostly because folks I know who have treos on other systems can’t run those apps either).

I haven’t monkeyed around with the other phones all that often, but I fully expect that a lot of them are probably equally goofed. Russell Beattie keeps a mobile blog where he talks about stuff like that. It’s a good read if your into that sort of thing, or just curious.

For what it’s worth, I use all the “old school” mobile apps that have worked fine with pretty much every web enabled phone I’ve got. Those are the ones at http://wap.oa.yahoo.com.
