Creative Commons essentially offers a "some rights reserved" vision of copyright ownership, allowing producers of content to be flexible about what rights we have in using their stuff. With this post, for instance, you're (unofficially) welcome to copy it, redisplay it, create derivative works, as long as you give me credit somewhere along the way...but how are you supposed to find it in the first place? Try Yahoo!'s Creative Commons search. Using this Beta product that I really just stumbled across a few minutes ago, you can specify the types of licensed work that you're looking so that you don't inadvertently run into copyright infringement issues that can be common with most other types of original work. Seems handy.
flickr also has a pretty extensive Creative Commons section.
